Workplace accident prevention system
Application of medium-distance RFID technology in hazardous areas

PAPELES ALLENDE SA is a company that belongs to the Saica Group and is a leader in the recovery of paper and cardboard. It currently has six plants in Catalonia.

NEED

The need the client sought to address was accident-prevention and protection of its workers in the hazardous areas of its plants. More specifically, the hazards lay in the zones near the shredding and pressing machines, and also involved preventing any operative falling onto the conveyor belts.

OBJECTIVE

ICNITA implements the people-identification system in hazardous zones by means of a complete RFID system and automation of control modules for deactivating the machines in the event of accidents. The system features robustness and utmost reliability in order to cover all zones and avoid false alarms and interference from other devices.

SOLUTION

The solution consists in equipping all operatives working in the plants’ hazardous areas with RFID tags. The procedure starts when the operative begins the working day, when his/her tag is verified with an RFID antenna located at the plant entrance in order to check that the tag’s battery is working properly. If the battery is low, a warning sounds to have it replaced.

The RFID antennae are placed on specific points of the machines (1 antenna per machine), and in positions that can be adjusted so as to detect only a tag that is passing through that antenna’s detection area.

The robustness of the ICNITA system ensures that the RFID antennae are totally insulated from mutual interference and interference from other devices.

Another strong point of the system lies in the control tag that constantly sends detection packets to the antennae located in the plants in order to ensure that they are always active and operational. This self-check tag is placed close to each antenna.

Finally, the system is connected to a control module that, by means of the pertinent tag, records all machine stoppages and keeps a historical record with date/time and conveyor number.

BENEFITS

It need hardly be said that being able to prevent workplace accidents by using this system of prevention is the finest benefit that a company can achieve.

The success of the system has been such that by the end of 2007 ICNITA will have installed it at 45 plants of other companies all over Spain, France and Portugal
